I have just looked at British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain awards. Many of the photographers make a point of speaking out for under-represented groups. In 100 photographs only I (one) is of a person over sixty five, yet, over sixty fives make up nineteen percent of the population. I think that is under-representation!.

I agree, I'm over 70.
Perhaps some older photographers don't enter competitions, so much of photography nowadays isn't about the taking it's about the fine tuning done in the computer.
I got left behind long ago when it came to the computer side of photography.
I dread having to learn a new iteration of a programme when the old version is superceded,
I suspect I'm not alone.
Now with AI I'm not sure I know this thing called 'Photography' any more.

I suspect that a lot of photographers, for whatever reason, fail to see the attractiveness of older faces, be it male or female. But an older face has a lot more to tell the viewer than a younger model, you can see the life they’ve lived, the things they have experienced, you don’t find that in a young person’s face.

In media generally, Perhaps we like looking at youth and remembering the good times in our own, We rarely can identify with those older as we have not got there yet.
How often does the actual story behind an older face surprise us, we don't see that vivid life in our older faces. We might see wisdom or the roughness of a hard life. But how many of us stop to get to know the whole life of a person.

I completely disagree with the above suggestions. I enter many Club, National and International competitions. The older generation are not underrepresented in either entrants or subject matter. Generally, we all look for an interesting character and this often suggests either young or very old. At my club, I would say that older faces are more likely as a subject than young.
