Dave (CEB) I suggest you post this question in the main forum area as nobody will see this buried away on an old review article.

I know it's an old article but I have the opportunity to buy this lens attached to an Olympus OM-D E-M1 II for a decent price and was wondering how this lens actually performs after all this time, well, eleven years actually. I'm a fan of older equipment but usually in the "Ancient" realm of Tamron Adaptall and Canon FD mount lenses but I have never ventured into more "Modern" lenses like this. Is it worth my time and money?

Dave

I rather like the sound of this lens.
It would make a good landscape pair with the Tamron 70-300, which is said to perform well at f11. Together they’d cost about £1,700, which isn’t awful to get 20-300mm. If I want really wide for particular purposes, I’d just get a basic 14mm MF - who needs AF for that focal length.
I prefer having 105-300mm to having 14-20mm. As for 16-105mm - that just isn’t enough range over 2 lens, especially at a combined cost of £2,300 (for the f4s).

LOL. It's amazing what a difference a full stop makes in the right place. Grin

"a not insubstantial 98mm x 1395mm"

Is it really nearly a metre and a half long? Wink

Peer would be Tamron 11-18/2.8 which optically is also very good.

And somewhat similar is Pentax DA*11-18/2.8, but with quite strange Ricoh style incompetitive price.. or rather severe overprice.

Another alternative is Sigma 35/1.4 Art which is much better lens in all aspects, unfortunately no longer offered new.
I have the original FA35/2 an although it is quite good lens, the main problem is that it has 6 aperture blades. Wide open the bokeh is pleasing. But once you start closing aperture to F2.8-F4 etc, you'll notice quite ugly hexagonal bokeh on any light sources in background. Second issue can be noticed once you use this lens for example on some concert with spotlights and various colored lights, this lens has significant purple fringing on such contrast borders.

Good review! A comparison to the Sony E 10-18mm f4 OSS (SEL-1018) would be nice... Cheers!
